What goes into building a new walkway in Clovis?

Walkway construction in Clovis means digging out the path, packing the base, pouring the concrete and cutting joints across it, because concrete shrinks as it dries and the joints give that stress somewhere to go. What you end up with is a walk from the driveway or side yard to your door that's even underfoot and easy to keep clean.

Most calls start with an old path that's cracked and tipping, a dirt track worn across the lawn or a newer yard that never got a walk at all. The price moves mostly with the walk's length and width, the finish you pick and how much digging and base work the ground needs. The schedule turns on the weather and on giving the concrete the time it needs to cure. Your own figure comes from the estimate I write after I've seen the job.

How we handle walkway construction

Once the layout is marked, our crew digs out the path, packs the base firm so the walk has something solid under it and sets the forms, then we pour and finish the top the way you chose. We cut joints across the walk and leave a separation where it meets the house, a gap that lets the new slab move on its own, so when the concrete shrinks the cracks follow the lines we planned and it won't crack against the house if it settles. Then we take our time curing it, because a rushed cure is how a surface starts to flake.

A new walk often runs past other masonry. If you'd like a low garden wall or a clean edge along it, our brick wall installation work can go in at the same time, and if you want natural stone steps or borders, that's part of our stone masonry.

Walkway construction on Clovis ground

Swelling soil mostly isn't the problem in Fresno County, where the main shrink-swell rating is low, so we're rarely fighting clay that heaves a walk up. Walks here still sink, though, usually because water sits under them, a nearby tree is drawing moisture out of the soil or the ground wasn't compacted well when the house went up. That's why we pack the base firm, pitch the walk so water runs off and take a hard look at any big tree near the path before we lay it out.

We're based in Clovis and build walks the same way in the cities around it, from Madera down to Kingsburg. Whether your walkway needs a permit is up to the city or county office for your address, and when a job needs one, we take care of it with that office and talk it through with you at the estimate.

Why call us for walkways

  • I write every estimate myself

I'm the one who comes out, walks the path with you and writes the estimate. Our crew does the work and I'm on site with them, so you're dealing with the same person from the first look to cleanup.

  • Licensed and insured for your job

We're licensed and insured. That matters on a job with digging, heavy concrete and a crew working in your yard.

  • Careful concrete work since 2020

I started this business in 2020 after learning the trade on real jobs. Concrete and masonry can last a long time when they're done well, so I'd rather take the slower way than leave you with work that gives out early.

  • Summer pours planned with you

National building guidance generally recommends taking precautions with concrete in hot weather, and one suggestion is pouring in cooler hours such as at night. With summers like ours, we plan the pour day with you at the estimate so the heat doesn't decide how your walk turns out.

Frequently asked questions

What causes a new concrete walkway to crack?

Concrete shrinks as it dries, so some cracking comes with any slab, and the joints across a walk are there to relieve that stress so the cracks land in the joints. Poor curing makes it worse, because it can lead to shrinkage cracks, scaling, flaking and other surface problems. That's why the planned joints and slow cure described above matter so much.

Can a concrete walkway look like brick or stone?

Yes, stamped concrete is poured and then pressed with a pattern so it looks like brick, stone or tile. You get that look without paying the higher price of the real materials, and we can go over patterns at the estimate.

How much does a new concrete walkway cost in Clovis?

Your cost is worked out in the estimate I write after seeing the path, because the same length of walk can price very differently from one yard to the next. Tearing out an old walk, adding curves or steps, choosing a stamped pattern over a plain broom finish and a tight side yard where concrete has to be wheeled in all add to it. A straight, plain walk on firm, open ground keeps it lower.

Can someone without a license build a small walkway in California?

Only on small jobs, because the state licensing board now sets the minor work exemption at $1,000, up from $500. That exemption holds only when the work needs no permit and the unlicensed person has no one working for them on the project.

How deep should the base be for a paver walkway?

Deeper where the soil drains poorly or has been dug up before, and shallower where it drains well or hasn't been disturbed. One paver maker's installation guide uses its minimum depths for the first kind of ground and its maximum depths for the second. That's why I look at drainage and any old digging in your yard before I write the estimate.

How do I find out what's buried before digging a walkway?

Call 811 before the digging starts, and one paver maker's guide advises doing it at least a few days ahead. Ask at the estimate who's placing that call for your job, so nobody assumes the other one did it.

  • Brick wall installation

A brick wall can frame a new walk, hold back a planter bed beside it or give the front yard a clean edge that matches the house.

  • Stone masonry

Natural stone steps, borders or a stone-faced path can work alongside a concrete walk when you want part of the route to look and feel more rugged.
