Request an estimateDoes your brick wall need tuckpointing?
Tuckpointing, which masons also call repointing, means cutting out the worn mortar between your bricks and filling those joints with fresh mortar. In Clovis we do it on house walls, chimneys, planters and garden walls, so you end up with sound, new joints where the tired ones were.
Most folks call us once they notice mortar crumbling out of a wall or joints sitting back from the brick face. The price mostly comes down to how many joints have actually failed and how high and hard to reach they are, and the schedule turns on the size of the wall and whether any bricks need replacing first. I come out, look at your wall and write the estimate, so the figure you get is for your wall and not a guess.
How we handle tuckpointing on your wall
I start by walking the wall with you and marking only the joints that have failed, because original mortar in good shape is better left alone than repointed, and since this is labor-heavy work, keeping it to the bad joints keeps your bill to what the wall needs. Our crew then cuts the worn mortar out of those joints and cleans them out so the new mortar has something solid to grab. We refill them with a mix no harder than what's already in your wall, because mortar stronger than the old stuff can crack the face right off the brick, what masons call spalling. Sand and cement both change the color of a finished joint, so where matching matters we try a small patch somewhere out of sight first. And before you sign anything, I'll tell you which kind of tuckpointing the bid covers, since the same word also names an old decorative joint that's a different job altogether.
If some bricks are cracked or flaking, we take care of those with brick repair before pointing around them, so the new joints aren't set against a brick that's on its way out. We also lay driveway pavers, which is handy if you'd like the brick on the house and the drive out front looked at together.
Hiring for tuckpointing in Clovis
California lets someone without a contractor's license take on small jobs, now up to $1,000 where it used to be $500, but only when the work needs no permit and that person isn't employing anyone on the job. So a handyman who shows up with a helper to point your chimney falls outside that rule, and it's a fair thing to ask anyone who bids your wall whether they're licensed.
We're based in Clovis and work the cities around it, from Madera down to Kingsburg and Reedley. Most of the tuckpointing calls we get are for brick chimneys, planters and garden walls with joints crumbling or worn back, and we see the same thing on jobs in Old Fig Garden and Sanger.
Why call us for tuckpointing
I write your estimate myself
I'm the one who comes out, looks over your wall and writes the estimate, and I'm on site with our crew while they work. That way the person who marked your joints is the one checking them as they're filled.

We've been in business since 2020, and careful mortar and brick repair is what we're best known for. I'd rather take the slower, careful way than leave you with joints that give out early.
Our own crew, licensed and insured

Frequently asked questions
Is tuckpointing the same as repointing?
Yes, for most jobs masons use both words for cutting out deteriorated mortar joints and filling them with fresh mortar. Tuckpointing is also the name of an older decorative style, a flush joint colored to match the brick with a thin strip of contrasting mortar run along the top, so asking which kind a bid covers keeps your quotes comparable.
How do I know if my mortar joints need tuckpointing?
Look for mortar worn back more than 1/4 inch from the brick face, crumbling mortar, holes or gaps in the joints, hairline cracks, and cracks between the brick and the mortar. Any of those means the joint is due for repointing, and you can check your own walls for them before asking anyone for a quote.
How long does tuckpointing last?
Mortar joints typically last more than 25 years, and the bricks themselves may well last over 100, depending on how exposed the wall is to weather and what mortar went into it. So over a brick wall's long life, plan on having the joints redone now and then as ordinary upkeep.
How much does tuckpointing cost in Clovis?
The cost mostly follows how many joints have to be cut out and refilled, so a wall with a few bad patches costs far less than one that's worn all over. Height and access, matching an older mortar color, bricks that need replacing first and fixing whatever's letting water in all add to it, and the old decorative style is a separate, slower job. I'll give you the number for your wall once I've seen it.
What must a California home improvement contract include?
A California home improvement contract has to carry set information, notices and disclosures that are there to protect you as the homeowner. Any change to the contract also has to be in writing, easy to understand, and tell you about your right to cancel.
Do I need to fix a moisture problem when I get tuckpointing done?
Yes, when decaying mortar shows up along with stains, flaking brick or moisture damage inside the house, the cause should be found and corrected along with the damage you can see. Otherwise fresh joints face the same trouble, so I look for where the water's coming from when I come out.
Other work that often goes with tuckpointing
Brick repair
When bricks are cracked, flaking or loose, fresh mortar around them won't hold up for long, so replacing the damaged ones first keeps the whole wall sound.
Driveway pavers
If your drive is cracked or looking tired and you'd like it to suit the brick on your house, a paver driveway can be laid to sit well beside it.
