What's involved in repointing a brick wall?

Brick pointing, often called repointing or tuckpointing, means cutting the worn mortar out of the joints in your brick and packing fresh mortar back in so the wall sheds water again. At Brickworks Clovis Concrete and Masonry we do it for homes in Clovis and the cities around it, from Madera down to Kingsburg and Reedley.

Most calls start with something you can see, like sandy grit at the foot of a wall, joints that look sunken or patchy, or a chimney that's started to stain. What moves the price is how much of the wall needs new joints, how hard it is to reach and whether any bricks are cracked and need replacing too. The schedule mostly turns on the size of the job and on you signing off on the test patch before we go ahead, and I'll give you your own price and timing when I come out for the estimate.

How we do brick pointing on your house

I start by looking at the wall with you, checking how deep the joints have worn, what the old mortar is like and how old the house is, because that tells me which mix belongs in it. Before we touch the whole wall, we set a small test patch of new mortar somewhere out of sight, so you can see the color match for yourself and we can adjust it if it's off. Once you're happy with it, our crew cuts the worn mortar out to an even depth, clears the dust from the joints, packs the new mortar in and tools each joint to match the shape of the old ones. We clean the brick faces as we go and leave your yard swept when we're done.

Sometimes the joints are only the symptom. If cracks step up through the mortar or a wall has started to lean, the wall may be moving, and fresh mortar won't hold until foundation repair settles what's going on underneath. Chimneys take more wear than any other brick on the house, so when the crown is cracked or bricks near the top have loosened, we handle it as chimney repair along with the joints.

Brick pointing in Clovis and California's masonry license

Brick work in Clovis sits under the same statewide rules as anywhere in California. The Contractors State License Board defines a masonry contractor as one who installs brick and other baked clay products, block and stone, and the board's masonry class also covers concrete, glass and clay block, manufactured stone and terra cotta. So repairing the joints of a brick wall is masonry work in the state's eyes, the same trade that built the wall in the first place.

Around Clovis we repoint a mix of older brick homes where the mortar has simply worn out, and newer houses with brick trim, planters and garden walls where a few joints have opened up. We see the same kinds of walls on jobs in Old Fig Garden and Reedley, and we match the mortar to each wall's age instead of reaching for one bag for every house.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know my brick needs repointing?

Your brick likely needs repointing if the mortar has worn back more than ¼ inch from the brick face, crumbles, has gaps, or shows hairline cracks or cracks along the edge where brick meets mortar. Each of those lets more moisture into the wall, and fresh joints are one of the best ways to keep it out. I'd still want to see the wall in person before calling it, so send a few photos or have me come look.

How long does mortar last compared with brick?

Mortar usually lasts roughly 25 to 50 years, while the brick itself can go 100 years or more. That's why an older wall in Clovis can need new joints while the bricks still have plenty of life left, so repointing usually saves the wall rather than replacing it.

Can any mason repoint my brick?

Not always, because brick industry guidance says repointing should be done by craftspeople with real repointing experience, and a fine mason who builds new walls may not have it. Ask anyone bidding on your wall about the repointing jobs they've done, since the guidance calls for checking a contractor's skill before you choose.

What kind of mortar should go back in my brick wall?

The new mortar should be no stronger than the old, because brick industry guidance warns that stronger mortar can make the face of the brick flake off. Softer mortar keeps the wear in the joints, which are much easier to redo than the bricks. Type O is often used on older brickwork and Type N may suit newer brick, so your home's age helps decide the mix.

How much does brick pointing cost in Clovis?

It depends on your wall, and I'll give you your own price at the estimate once I've seen it. Redoing the worn sections of a sound wall costs less than every joint on the house, and work high on a chimney costs more because of the time and setup it takes to reach. Lab testing of the old mortar adds cost too, but it's usually only needed on historic buildings that must match closely, so most homes skip it.

What is the best way to remove old mortar from brick?

On older brick, preservation guidance says hand chisels carry the least risk of damage, though the work is slow and labor-heavy. Power saws used on thin joints, which most brick walls have, almost always break the brick edges. I'll walk you through how we plan to clear the joints on your wall, and why, at the estimate.

  • Foundation repair

When a crack zigzags through the brick or a door near it starts sticking, the house may be settling, and that's worth sorting out before any wall gets new joints.

  • Chimney repair

A stained, cracked or leaning chimney usually needs more than new mortar, from a sound crown on top to replacing bricks that have loosened near the roofline.
