What goes into building a block wall in Clovis?

A concrete block wall is a masonry wall set on a poured concrete footing, and in Clovis, CA we build them to give a yard privacy along a property line or to hold back soil where the ground changes level.

Maybe you're tired of replacing a wood fence, or the yard slopes and the dirt keeps creeping onto the patio, and if it's mostly a slope you're fighting, our page on retaining wall construction goes deeper. The price mostly follows how long and tall the wall is, whether it holds back soil, how easy it is to get block and concrete to the spot and how the top is finished. The schedule turns on the footing, since it has to be dug and poured before any block goes up, and on what we hit when we dig and how hot it is that week. You'll get your own figure when I come out for the estimate.

How we build a concrete block wall

The first thing I figure out is whether your wall is just for privacy or has to hold dirt back, because those two are built very differently. If it's holding soil, the footing and the steel running through the block carry the load, so we plan them from the first measurement instead of trying to add strength later. From there we string the line, dig and pour the footing with steel standing up out of it to tie the wall down, then lay the block, fill the cores that carry steel with grout and finish the top with a coping, a cap that keeps water from soaking down into the wall. We clean up before we leave, so you're left with a wall and not a pile of broken block.

A block wall often ties into other work. If the block has to carry part of a house, an addition or a garage instead of screening a yard, that's foundation block wall installation, and it's planned around the weight of the building. And plenty of folks who want a wall around a patio end up wanting a grill counter too, so we can plan the wall and the outdoor kitchen masonry together and match them.

Building concrete block walls on Clovis ground

Whether a block wall at your address needs a permit isn't something I'll guess at, and when it does, we take care of it with the city or county office for your address and go over it with you at the estimate. The ground around here is usually fairly easy on a wall, since one county summary of soil survey data rates Fresno County's soils as low for shrinking and swelling, though that's a picture of the whole county and not a promise about your lot. On lots with Fresno series soil, there's typically a duripan, a hard cemented layer, about 24 inches down, anywhere from 14 to 36 inches, which can sit right where a footing wants to go. We find out where it is when we dig and plan the footing around what's actually there.

We're based in Clovis, and around here we see a lot of block going up for privacy along back property lines and to hold a yard where the lot steps down. The same kinds of calls come in from Madera down to Kingsburg and plenty of places in between.

Why call us for block walls

  • The owner writes your estimate

I'm the one who comes out to look at the job and write the estimate, and I'm on site while our crew builds the wall. The person who planned your footing is there when it gets dug.

  • Licensed and insured for wall work

We're licensed and insured. That's the first thing to ask about before you let anyone dig a footing in your yard.

  • Building masonry since 2020

We've been in business since 2020, and I learned this trade hands-on, starting with a little block wall at my own place. I'd still rather take the slower, careful way than hand you a wall that gives out early.

  • Block laid around summer heat

Guidance on hot-weather masonry says many problems with block work stay small when it's laid outside the hot midday hours. In a Clovis summer, ask us how we'll schedule the laying, because I'd rather plan for the heat than rush through it.

Frequently asked questions

What can a concrete block wall do for my yard in Clovis?

A block wall can give you privacy and screening, a bit more security, a quieter yard away from road noise, shade and a break from the wind, and it can simply look good. What you need it to do first decides how it gets built, so that's the first thing I'll ask.

How do I know if I need a retaining wall or just a garden wall?

If the wall will have soil pushing on one side, you need a retaining wall, one designed to stand up to that earth pressure. In a retaining wall, the concrete footing keeps it from tipping over or sliding under the soil, and steel runs upright through the block cores. A garden wall still needs a footing to hold it against tipping and sliding, but it isn't carrying a yard's worth of dirt.

How do I make sure a block retaining wall can handle a driveway or an earthquake?

Ask whoever builds it how the design accounts for those loads, because the industry's standard reinforcement guide for block retaining walls covers soil pressure only. Extra weight on the soil behind the wall, like a driveway or a slope above it, and earthquake loads need to be considered on top of that where they apply. If your wall has either, I'll go through it with you at the estimate.

Does a retaining block wall cost more than a privacy wall in Clovis?

Usually, yes, because a wall that holds back soil needs a heavier footing and more steel through the block than a wall that only screens a yard. Height adds to that quickly, and so does a finished coping or a block face that's meant to be seen. You'll get your own figure at the estimate.

Who licenses masonry contractors in California?

The Contractors State License Board, or CSLB, licenses and regulates California's construction industry, and masonry has its own classification there, C-29 Masonry Contractor. It's good to know before you hire anyone to build a wall at your house.

How much can a contractor ask for up front in California?

On a California home improvement job, the down payment can be no more than $1,000 or 10 percent of the total contract price, whichever is less. After that, the board says any further payments have to be clearly listed in the contract, and each one has to match work already done or materials already delivered to your home.

  • Foundation block wall installation

When the block has to hold up a house, an addition or a garage instead of screening a yard, this is the work that sets that foundation wall solid.

  • Outdoor kitchen masonry

If your new wall wraps a patio, a block grill island or counter can be planned at the same time and finished to match the wall around it.
