What does it take to build a retaining wall in Clovis?

Retaining wall construction in Clovis means building a wall of block, stone or concrete that holds back a slope. You get flat, usable yard, and the soil stays where it belongs instead of creeping into the lawn or the patio.

Most folks call us when a slope keeps sliding toward the house, an old wall has started to lean, or they want to level off part of the yard for a patio. The price mostly moves with the wall's height and length, the material, how much drainage it needs, whether soft ground under the base has to be dug out and replaced, and whether an old wall comes out first. The schedule turns on the same things, plus how much digging there is and whether a taller wall needs an engineer's look before we start. We're based in Clovis and work in the cities around it, from Madera down to Kingsburg and Reedley, and I'll give you a figure for your own wall when I come out for the estimate.

How we build a retaining wall

Water behind the wall is the thing I worry about most, so drainage goes into the plan before anything else, starting with how your yard slopes and where the runoff ends up. When the job starts, our crew pulls the plants and roots out of the dig area, since that material rots and settles if it's left in, then digs down to firm ground and swaps out anything soft for compacted gravel so the base doesn't sink. We set the first course dead level, because every course above it follows that line, then build the wall up with clean gravel behind it so water has a way out, packing the backfill in layers as we go. Last, we cap the wall, shape the soil so surface water runs away from it, and clean up before we leave.

A new wall often sits next to older masonry, and if there's a brick or stone wall on the property worth keeping, masonry restoration can bring it back so the old and new work look right together. And when the wall frees up a flat spot for a patio, that's usually where people start picturing a fire feature, so we do fireplace installation too.

Retaining wall construction in Clovis yards

California's contractor licensing board describes a concrete contractor as one who forms, pours, places, finishes and installs concrete work. So if a poured concrete wall is on the table for your Clovis yard, ask whoever's pouring it about their license before you sign anything, and at the estimate we'll go over whether block or poured makes more sense for your slope.

A lot of the walls we're called about around Clovis are old timber walls that have started to lean, or backyards where the ground steps down toward the house and dirt washes onto the patio after a good watering. We see the same thing on jobs in Madera and Kingsburg, and the fix starts the same way, by working out where the water goes before we pick the wall.

Why call us for retaining walls

  • I come out and stay on site

I'm the one who comes out to look at your slope and write the estimate, and I'm on site with our crew while they build. That way the person who planned the drainage is right there making sure it goes in the way we talked about.

  • Building walls since 2020

I taught myself on planters and a little block wall at my own place, then learned the rest on real jobs before starting this business in 2020. Six years in, I still take the slower, careful way when it's the right one, because a wall done well can last a very long time.

  • Licensed and insured in California

We're licensed and insured. If you're comparing bids, check that with everyone you talk to, since a wall holding back your yard isn't something you want to pay for twice.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a retaining wall cost in Clovis?

Retaining wall construction in the Fresno area usually costs about $20 to $55 per square foot of wall face. One Fresno price for poured concrete walls covers digging out, site prep, forms, pouring, basic finishing and cleanup, but not tearing out an old wall, curved walls, walls taller than 3 feet or yards with difficult soil, so those jobs run higher. I'll give you a number for your own wall at the estimate.

Is a block retaining wall cheaper than poured concrete?

Usually, yes. A concrete masonry trade group's manual says dry-stacked block walls typically run 25 to 40 percent less than poured concrete walls. Dry-stacked block also lets water drain through the face, which keeps pressure from building up behind it, and the units resist cracking, where treated timbers and railroad ties can splinter and rot over the years.

When does a retaining wall need an engineer?

Illinois Extension's guidance is that a landscape contractor can build most walls under four feet, while taller walls often need an engineer to assess the site. A block wall installation guide adds that local code rules decide those needs, so if you're picturing something taller, I'd rather we talk about an engineer at the estimate than halfway through the dig.

What causes retaining walls to fail?

Mostly water, and people not talking to each other. One review of retaining wall failures found a large majority came from poor communication on the project team and water that wasn't managed, whether that was groundwater seeping in, surface water handled badly or a leaky water or sewer line. That's why I ask about sprinklers, downspouts and any soggy spots before we plan the wall.

How long does it take to build a retaining wall?

The laying itself often goes faster than people expect, since a concrete masonry trade group says an experienced crew of three or four typically builds 300 to 500 square feet of block wall a day. Before any digging, California's 811 Call Before You Dig service marks underground utilities a few days ahead, so the schedule leaves room for that, and our crew digs carefully around the marked lines. Ask me about crew size when we meet if you're planning around the work.

Does a retaining wall need a drain pipe?

Often, yes. One block maker's install guide requires a drain pipe for any reinforced wall, for gravity walls over 4 feet tall, which are walls that hold the slope back by their own weight, and for any site with poor drainage. A short gravity wall on ground that drains well falls outside that list, and I'll tell you what yours needs once I've seen the yard.

  • Masonry restoration

If an older brick or stone wall on your property is crumbling, sagging or stained, restoring it can keep the original look while making it sound again.

  • Fireplace installation

A new wall often frees up a level spot for gathering, and a masonry fireplace built to suit your house gives that space somewhere warm to sit.
