What goes into a new paver driveway in Clovis?

A paver driveway in Clovis is a dug-out, compacted base with concrete pavers locked together on top, and when that base is done right you get a driveway that carries your cars and still looks good up close.

Most people call us when the old concrete drive has cracked or sunk at the street edge, or when a gravel or dirt drive has turned into dust in summer and mud in winter. We're based in Clovis and work in the cities around it, from Madera down to Kingsburg and Reedley and plenty of places in between. The price mostly comes down to the size of your driveway in square feet, whether the old one has to be broken out and hauled off, how deep the base goes, the paver and pattern you pick, and whether heavy vehicles park on it. The schedule turns on getting the utility lines marked before we dig and how much has to come out first, and I'll measure all of it at the estimate so you get a figure for your own driveway.

How we build a driveway with pavers

Most of a paver driveway is the base under it, so that's where we spend our time. We get the utility lines marked first, because we're digging well below the surface and nobody wants to find a pipe or a wire with a shovel. Then we dig out the old driveway or soil, compact the ground and spread the base rock in layers, packing each one, since a base packed all at once tends to settle later and take the pavers with it. We set edge restraints along the sides so the pavers can't creep outward, level a thin bed of sand, lay the pavers in your pattern and sweep sand into the joints so they lock together. Before any of that, I'll talk through with you whether permeable pavers make sense for your lot or a standard install suits it better, and I'd rather take the slower way on the base than leave you with a driveway that dips early.

A driveway usually meets other masonry. If yours runs along a slope or the yard drops off beside it, retaining wall construction gives that edge solid ground to lean on. And if the brick steps, pillars or planters by the drive are crumbling at the joints, masonry restoration brings them back so they don't look worn next to the new pavers, and that careful mortar work is what we're best known for.

What to look for in a Clovis driveway pavers contract

California counts building or replacing a driveway as home improvement work, so the contractor has to be licensed by the Contractors State License Board and the contract you sign has to carry notices and disclosures meant to protect you. Look for them before you sign for driveway pavers in Clovis. Any change to the job has to be written down, legible and easy to understand, and it has to tell you about your right to cancel. You can also ask a contractor to name its subcontractors, and it has to give you each one's name, contact information, license number and classification.

Around Clovis we mostly replace older poured driveways that have cracked or settled, and we see the same thing on jobs in Sanger and Old Fig Garden. Most of those drives meet a garage slab, a walkway and some brick or block, so we plan where the pavers end at each one before we dig.

Why call us for driveway pavers

  • The owner writes your estimate

I'm the one who comes out to look at your driveway and write the estimate, and I'm on site while our crew builds it. That way the person who talked through the base with you is the one watching it go in.

  • Building masonry since 2020

I started this business in 2020 after teaching myself on my own planters and a little block wall, then learning the rest on real jobs. Most of our calls come from homeowners in Clovis and the cities around it, so we know the kinds of driveways and front yards you're working with.

  • Licensed and insured for your driveway

We're licensed and insured, and I'm glad to go over the details at the estimate. Check the same thing with anyone you're comparing, since tearing out a driveway is real work on your property.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a paver driveway cost in Clovis, CA?

2022 figures for the Fresno area put a sand-set paver driveway, base included, at about $15 to $19 per square foot, with tearing out an old driveway on top of that. So your driveway's size does most of the work in setting the number, and higher-end stone or brick pavers and more involved patterns push it up. I'll measure yours at the estimate.

How deep should the base be under a paver driveway?

Industry guidance calls for a base at least 6 inches thick under a home driveway on well-drained ground, and thicker where the ground stays wet or is weak. That's guidance rather than code, and one 2022 Fresno price assumed just a 4-inch base, so ask every bidder how deep they go before you compare prices. I'll tell you how deep we plan to go and why.

Are permeable pavers a good choice for my driveway in Clovis?

They can be, as long as dirt and dust around your lot stay under control, because national guidance warns against permeable pavers on very dirty sites where washed-in dirt or blowing dust can clog the surface fast. The joint stones also tend to settle over the first few months, so plan on refilling the joints about three to six months after they go in. If your lot backs onto open ground or a dirt lane, a standard install is usually the safer pick.

How do I get utility lines marked before digging a driveway?

In many places you call one number at least two days before digging, and the utility companies come out and mark their lines. Paver guidance says to check with them before excavating so the dig doesn't damage pipes or wires. On our jobs, that marking is the first thing on the schedule.

What is the best way to build a paver driveway for heavy trucks?

One cost guide suggests pouring a concrete slab on a compacted base and setting the pavers on top of it in sand or mortar when a driveway carries heavy loads. That's one guide's suggestion, not a rule, and it adds a step and cost. Tell me at the estimate if an RV, a work truck or a trailer will sit on the drive and we'll talk it through.

Should I hire a certified paver installer for my driveway?

It's worth asking about, since the paver industry group recommends CMHA Certified Concrete Paver Installers for interlocking paver work. Ask each bidder whether its crew holds that certification, along with the base depth and license questions above.

  • Retaining wall construction

When your driveway cuts into a slope or the yard falls away beside it, a retaining wall holds the soil back so the paver edge keeps its support.

  • Masonry restoration

Old brick steps, pillars or planters next to a new paver driveway can look tired by comparison, and restoring them brings the whole front of the house together.
