Does my stone wall need repointing or a rebuild?

Stone masonry in Clovis is mostly two kinds of work, repointing old stone walls by swapping crumbling mortar for new, and setting new natural stone. Done right, both keep water from collecting in the wall and wearing out the stone.

Most stone calls start with mortar that's turned sandy and falls out when you brush it, a stone that rocks when you push on it, or dark wet streaks low on a wall. Sometimes it's a new project instead, like a stone planter or a garden wall. The price moves with the size and height of the wall, how deep the damage goes and which stone you choose, and the schedule mostly turns on fixing any drainage problem first and getting the right stone delivered. I'll give you your own figure when I come out and look.

How we handle stone masonry, start to finish

I start by looking at the whole wall, not just the bad joints, because loose stones and wet spots usually point to where water's getting in. On an older stone wall the mortar has to let moisture out, so we pick a mix that lets the wall dry instead of whatever's quickest to mix. Where it's safer for the stone, our crew takes the old joints out by hand, which is slower than a grinder but a lot easier on the stone's edges. Then we pack the new mortar in, shape the joints to match the rest of the wall and clean up before we leave. On new stone work we prep the surface, set the stone, point the joints and leave the site clean.

Stone often sits next to other masonry that needs the same care. If your house or chimney is brick with sandy joints, brick pointing is the same patient joint work done on brick. When cracks run through the stones themselves or part of a wall has dropped, I'll tell you plainly if it looks like settling, because foundation repair has to come before any new mortar goes in.

Before you hire for stone masonry in Clovis

Whether a stone job needs a permit isn't something I'll guess at, because the city or county office that covers your address makes that call, and when yours does need one, we take care of it with that office and talk it through with you at the estimate. Licensing is the other thing to check. California's state licensing board has its own class for masonry contractors, C-29, and only lets someone work without a license on a job up to $1,000 that needs no permit, with nobody working for them. The board also says a bigger job can't be broken into pieces under $1,000 to fit that rule. And if the plan changes partway through, California law says any change to a home improvement contract has to be in writing, easy to read and understand, and has to tell you about your right to cancel, so don't agree to extra work on a handshake.

Around Clovis we see a lot of older stone planters, garden walls and fireplace fronts whose joints have sanded out, often right where a downspout or sprinkler hits the base, so we track down the water before we touch the mortar. We also find old walls patched with hard gray mortar that we take out carefully so it stops trapping water against the stone. We see the same on jobs in Old Fig Garden and Sanger, and we work the cities around Clovis, from Madera down to Kingsburg and Reedley and plenty of places in between.

Frequently asked questions

Is repointing enough, or does my stone wall need rebuilding?

If the stones are sound and still sitting tight, repointing the joints is usually enough. If stones are loose or a section of wall has moved, that part usually needs taking down and relaying, and I can usually tell which once I've pushed on the stones and opened up a joint.

What kind of mortar should I use on an older stone wall?

Use a mortar that lets moisture leave the wall, not one that seals it in. Mortar that stops moisture from getting out and drying off ends up damaging the stones themselves, so the question to ask about any repair is whether the new mortar lets the wall dry, and that's how we choose ours.

What causes mortar to wash out of a stone wall?

Water hitting the same spot over and over, often from a leaking downspout, is a common reason mortar washes out. New mortar won't hold until that's fixed, so the downspout and any other drainage problem should be repaired first, and you can plan that into the same job.

How do I choose stone for a veneer wall in Clovis?

Pick a stone with a track record of standing up to the weather where you live, and ask the supplier to certify that it suits local weathering before it's ordered. One veneer guide also advises against the open-joint dry stack look outdoors anywhere walls go through freeze and thaw, and keeps it for indoors or warm places where it doesn't freeze.

What is the best way to install stone veneer so it lasts?

Bed the whole back of every stone in mortar, because a natural stone veneer guide calls that essential and says even small gaps can collect water and make the veneer fail early. Ask any mason how they fill the back of each stone, since the answer shows how carefully they work. For manufactured stone veneer, a trade association guide also calls for shielding it from drying too fast when it's over 100°F, or over 90°F with wind above 8 mph, from before the work until 72 hours after.

How much does stone masonry cost in Clovis, CA?

I can't give you a fair number until I've seen the wall, and I'll write one up when I come out for the estimate. Repointing a wall whose stones are still sound costs less than relaying a section, taking old joints out by hand takes more labor than grinding, and a drainage fix adds to the job but keeps the new mortar from washing out. Hard-to-reach walls and harder-to-get stone push it up too.

  • Brick pointing

If your house or chimney is brick, the joints wear out the same way stone joints do, and catching them early keeps water out of the wall behind.

  • Foundation repair

When a stone wall or the house beside it cracks in a long stair-step line, the trouble may be underneath, and that's worth sorting out before anyone repoints.
